Andrés Barría

Honorary Consul of Chile

Dr. Andrés Barría serves as the Honorary Consul of Chile in Washington State since 2016. He was born in Santiago with deep family roots in Castro, Chiloé. His upbringing spanned Buenos Aires and Caracas before he returned to Chile to pursue biochemistry studies at the University of Chile, where he later obtained his Ph.D. in neuroscience from the School of Medicine.

In 1994, Dr. Barría came to the United States to work on his doctoral thesis at the Vollum Institute in Portland, Oregon. Continuing his pursuit of neuroscience, he became a postdoctoral fellow at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in Long Island, New York. In 2005, he accepted a position at the School of Medicine at the University of Washington, leading him to relocate to Seattle, where he has resided since. Dr. Barría holds the title of full professor at the School of Medicine, where he conducts research in neuroscience and teaches courses on the subject. Additionally, he serves as the Assistant Dean for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

As an Honorary Consul, Dr. Barria strives to provide assistance to Chilean nationals who have migrated to the state of Washington. He represents Chile to state authorities and contributes to fostering cultural and economic exchange between Chile and the State of Washington. He has been an active member of the consular association of Washington, where he previously held the position of vice president.
